The Jay Leno Invite Campaign

After a year Jaws Jumbo Burgers is still trying to reel Jay in to try it's hottest selling burger...The Thank You Jay Leno Burger.

The Jaws Jumbo Burgers Crew  has been courting Jay Leno since March of last year to come and try the Thank You Leno Burger, a burger named in his honor to thank him for the free shows he did for the unemployed at the Palace in Auburn Hills. We took out a $1, 500 dollar ¼ page ad in the Los Angeles Daily newspaper inviting to pay for Jay and his wife Mavis  to come back to Michigan to try the Thank You Jay Leno Burger. The burger has two third-pound ground sirloin patties, mushrooms, four strips of bacon, and double Swiss- American cheese. Lastly, we also offered Mr. Leno his very own franchise with us included, to have in Burbank so his audience members could try the burgers. We  have  done everything to gain Mr. Leno's attention. We even started a blog of our gimmick. Visit:thejaylenoinvite.blogspot.com. There is also a Thank You Jay Leno Facebook page. And now we are enlisting the help of our customers with an email campaign. Jay still has not responded to us and we aren't going to stop trying until we hear from him or his staff. Please email nbc.com and go to the bottom of the page to contact us and tell Jay to come to Jaws to try The Thank You Jay Leno Burger.

Thank You,

The Jaws Crew

The Counter Project
4/6/09 Dearborn businesses should make the most of Leno's trip to southeast Michigan
By: Sean Duffy
Jay Leno is going to be performing two free shows for Detroit's unemployeed masses Tuesday and Wednesday this week at the Palace of Auburn Hills. With so much publicity around his trip to the area, I'm surprised more local businesses haven't tried to capitalize from it.

Well, that's not to say no local businesses are making the most of Leno's two days here: Jumbo Jaws Burger in Farmington Hills has created a massive artery-clogging bacon cheeseburger and named it after Leno. There's a
story in the Detroit News about it.

But why aren't any Dearborn businesses doing anything to draw Jay's attention? He's a big fan of cars, and Dearborn is the original Motor City.

One of the car dealerships could offer to let Jay tool around town in one of their vehicles while he's here. Fairlane or Village Ford could give him a Mustang or F150. Les Stanford could let him use a Vette.

And Jay's a huge fan of blue-collar grit. How about The Henry Ford offering to take him on a tour of the Rouge Plant, where the F150s are actually made?

And here's a no-brainer of an idea: the people at Parisian Bistro need to invite Jay to lunch, as a special "thank you" for mentioning them on the Tonight Show a couple weeks ago (See video clip here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmSGeRqe-QQ).

Also, not to be outdone by Jumbo Jaws Burger, since Jay claims to eat nothing but meat (no veggies since 1969!), Dearborn's own top-tier burger joint—Miller's bar— should play host to the visiting Tonight Show host too. Let Jay decide who has the best burger in metro Detroit.

Or how about inviting him for a meet-and-greet with employees at Ford World Headquarters? Jay loves the American automakers; how could he say no to a Glass House invitation?

Or how about a local salon or barber offering to give Jay a free haircut this week, and any other time he returns to the Dearborn area?

Hell, even if Jay doesn't take the business up on the offer, as long as they issue a public invitiation through the media, they've gotten some free publicity.

It's not too often that A-list celebs go out of their way to honor the Detroit area like this; so why aren't more local businesses recognizing this fact, and making him feel especially welcome and appreciated during the 48 hours he'll be here? Plus, for any local business, getting themselves associated with Jay Leno in any way while he's in town would be awesome publicity. So why is no one making any kind of effort to do this— other than Jumbo Jaws Burger, that is?

Come on, let's get it together already.

Burger joint has deal for Leno if stupid NBC plan fails
Stay tuned for "Why NBC is Stupid." But first, these words from Jaws Jumbo Burgers of Farmington Hills:

Hi, Jay!  Jay Leno was still the host of "The Tonight Show" when manager Paul Porter and the gang at Jaws invited him in for a bite. They were so taken by his generosity when he performed for out-of-work Michiganians last spring -- and so appalled at the gracelessness of the Detroit City Council members who complained that he was doing it in Auburn Hills -- that they named a mammoth double-decker burger after him and asked him to swing by with the crew anytime, on the house.

jayleno2.jpgHe didn't show up. So they filmed a lowest-possible-budget video inviting him for a visit, all expenses paid, and posted it at www.jawsjumboburgers.net. They took out an ad in the Los Angeles Daily

News, at a cost of close to $1,000, with the same offer. And most recently -- as the ratings for "The Jay Leno Show" slid down the grease trap -- they offered him a fresh opportunity: His very own Jaws Jumbo Burgers franchise in Burbank, Calif.

That's Porter on the far right in the video, making the pitch and then sweetening the offer with two oversized cookies. He still hasn't heard from Leno, but if he does, he'll make sure to say the franchise doesn't really have to be in Burbank. They'll set it up wherever Leno likes, with the same cash-only, cooked-fresh, friendly-faced approach they use at the Jaws flagship (and so far only ship) on Orchard Lake Road south of 13 Mile.

What Porter won't say is that as highly as he thinks of Leno, he didn't like "The Jay Leno Show" any better than the 300 million other Americans who didn't watch it. And he does like Conan O'Brien, which means he'll probably wind up having to switch between the two at 11:35 p.m. Which is another reason NBC is stupid.

Let's make a deal

After weeks of frequently entertaining sparring, NBC and O'Brien cut a deal Thursday. He'll get $33 million to flee "The Tonight Show," where he's been averaging 2.5 million viewers per night compared to 4.2 million for David Letterman and 5.3 million for Leno before NBC chased him off the set last year.

That was stupid. It followed by five years a stupid decision in which O'Brien was promised Leno's job -- even though Leno was doing it quite successfully -- because the network was worried O'Brien would leave when his contract for "Late Night" ran out. The question is, where would he have gone?

Letterman's "Late Show" is on CBS. ABC has already said it doesn't want to dump "Nightline" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and while O'Brien might in fact wind up on Fox, the Fox affiliates will not be happy to give up the highly profitable syndicated sitcoms most of them air opposite "Tonight." Plan C would be Comedy Central or some other cable network guaranteed not to have the viewership or budget of the Big 4.

It's possible, then, that O'Brien would have stayed put. And if he had, NBC would not have stupidly replaced him at 12:35 p.m. with the likeable Jimmy Fallon, who has improved to the point where he's only bad.

More of the same

Meantime, NBC's solution for what to do with Leno was to pinch pennies in the one prime-time slot where a failed experiment could do the most damage.

The principal attraction to "The Jay Leno Show" from a programming standpoint was that it cost a lot less to produce than the one-hour dramas and news magazines normally seen at 10 p.m. What NBC seemed to forget -- stupidly -- is that the public's tolerance for repetitive prime-time programming, on the order of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" or "Deal or No Deal," waxes and wanes in a hurry.

When Leno's ratings cratered, the collateral damage included the local 11 p.m. news programs that depend on a strong lead-in. When the newscasts stumbled, they tripped up "The Tonight Show," meaning O'Brien was sandbagged by the host he replaced who is now replacing him.

NBC's first stupid plan when it decided to cancel Leno was to put him on for 30 minutes at 11:35 p.m., pushing "Tonight" back to tomorrow. There's no reason to think an abridged version of Leno would fly any higher than a full hour of him at 10 p.m., but it didn't matter.

While NBC had stupidly assured Leno that O'Brien wouldn't mind being bumped back past midnight, O'Brien did in fact object, with humor if not grace. "In the press this week, NBC has been calling me every name in the book," he said at one point. "In fact, they think I'm such an idiot they now want me to run the network."

A free agent now

O'Brien is considerably richer and free to look for new opportunities. Leno, meanwhile, has been stupidly set up for failure in a setting where he'd worked hard to create almost nonstop success.

When he returns to "Tonight" on March 1, after the Winter Olympics, he'll be competing against his own legacy and a strengthened Letterman. By September, he could also be up against O'Brien.

He'll start with no momentum and at least a faintly tarnished image, and anything less robust than his previous ratings will look like a collapse.

Maybe the burger franchise isn't such a bad idea.

'If NBC doesn't work out, open up a Jaws

Jaws Jumbo Burgers/AP photo So what do you say Jay?
Jaws Jumbo Burgers of Farmington Hills wants Jay Leno to open up a restaurant in Burbank.
That's Jaws' 'Thank You Jay Leno Burger' on the left.

Paul Porter, manager of Jaws Jumbo Burgers in Farmington Hills, has a a business proposal for Jay Leno: open up a Jaws in Burbank.
"Hey Jay," Porter says in a YouTube video meant to catch the late night host's attention. "You should open up a Jaws Jumbo Burgers in Burbank, California so all the fans and guests of your show can enjoy a Jay Leno Burger."
And that's not all: "For every store you open, we'll throw in a fancy Jay Leno Burger T-shirt," he says.
Who could turn down a deal like that?
As hinted at in its name, Jaws is famous for its huge burgers and decor from the "Jaws" movies.
Porter and the rest of the Jaws gang started trying to nab Jay Leno's attention back in April, when Leno came to Auburn Hills to give a free concert for Metro Detroiters hard-hit by the recession.
They created a burger they called the "Thank You Jay Leno Burger" in response and invited Leno to come try one -- all expenses paid.
According to The Detroit News' Neal Rubin, Jaws even spent $1,000 to take out an ad in the Los Angeles Daily News, calling to Leno to come to their restaurant.
No response.
But the offer's still on the table, as is this new one. Watch Jaws' pitch below. That's Porter doing the talking.

Jay Leno offered burger joint if 'Tonight Show' fails

Jay Leno's not in primetime anymore. AP Jay Leno has another offer on the table -- and this one's not from NBC. A burger restaurant named Jaws Jumbo Burger in a Michigan suburb is offering Jay his very own location in Burbank, just in case... Offering Leno some options

FARMINGTON HILLS,MICH.- If Jay Leno's day job doesn't work out, the talk-show host has a standing offer to go into the restaurant business. Jaws Jumbo Burgers in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills has offered Leno, who is moving back to NBC late night from his primetime spot, the opportunity to franchise his very own location of the restaurant in Burbank, Calif. The restaurant also posted the offer in an ad in the Los Angeles Daily News.

Paul Porter, manager at Jaws Jumbo, said the restaurant has heard back from "The Tonight Show" host after making the offer. "He gave two free shows here in Detroit last year," Porter said, "and we thought it would be a nice way to say "thank you" The restaurant does have on its menu the "Thank You Jay Leno Burger," which includes two third-pound ground sirloin patties, mushrooms, four strips of bacon, and double Swiss- American cheese for $10.25. For lighter appetites, Jaws offers the Kevin Eubanks," named for Leno's musical director, with one patty. "Kevin really isn't any less of a man, " Porter said, but he does appear smaller than Jay."

Farmington Hills eatery offers Leno huge thank you meal
Manager Paul Porter
l April 6, 2009 l Neal Rubin l The Detroit News l
No one at Jaws Jumbo Burger has calculated the calories in the Thank You Jay Leno burger. Heck, nobody has even finished one. But manager Paul Porter is certain of this:
"If you're counting calories, you don't want it." Considering the number of jokes Leno bounces off the eating habits of Americans, that elevates the burger's irony factor as much as it'll elevate cholesterol levels. Then again, he says he hasn't eaten a vegetable since 1969, so maybe he'll swing by. I had the folks at Jaws make me a $7.89 Leno burger -- to admire, not consume -- and it's a vision: A 5 1/2 -inch-tall double-decker, about the circumference of a salad plate, with mushrooms, double bacon and double Swiss-American cheese. The restaurant, at 2916 Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills, has offered to stuff Leno and his crew for free, at absolutely any hour, while he's in town for Tuesday's and Wednesday's free performances at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Jaws Jumbo Burger trying to lure Leno

Jaws Jumbo Burgers announced today that they have been courting Jay Leno since March of last year to come and try the Thank You Leno Burger, a burger named in his honor to thank him for the free shows he did for the unemployed at The Palace in Auburn Hills. Secondly, They took out a 1⁄4 page ad in the Los Angeles Daily newspaper inviting to pay for Jay and his wife, Mavis, to come back to Michigan to try the Thank You Jay Leno Burger. The burger has two third-pound ground sirloin patties, mushrooms, four strips of bacon, and double Swiss- American cheese. Lastly, they offered Mr.Leno his very own franchise with themselves included, to have in Burbank so his audience members could try the burgers.

Manager Paul Porter says the staff has done everything to gain Leno's attention. They even started a blog of their gimmick. Visit thejaylenoinvite.blogspot.com. There is also a Thank You Jay Leno Facebook page.

Next up Jaws Jumbo Burgers is going to enlist the help of their customers with an e-mail campaign.

Still Trying

Farmington Hills - It's been a year since Jaws Jumbo Burgers named one of its creations after Jay Leno as a thank you for the free performances he offered to unemployed Michigan residents at the Palace of Auburn Hills last year. The restaurant invited Leno and his wife, Mavis, to return to Michigan to taste the Thank You Jay Leno Burger, which includes two third-pound ground sirloin patties, mushrooms, four strips of bacon, and double Swiss- American cheese.

It also offered Leno his own franchise, started a blog and a Thank You Jay Leno Facebook page, but none of the gimmicks have gotten a bite from the comedian.

Manager Paul Porter won't quit trying. Jaws Jumbo Burgers is enlisting the help of customers to mount an e-mail campaign to get Leno's attention. Visit www.jawsjumboburgers.net for details.
